Korea Selatan merupakan negara yang memiliki budaya patriarki tertinggi di dunia sekaligus peringkat paling rendah dalam hal kesetaraan gender. Setelah ibu nya meninggal pada tahun 1974, Park sudah menjadi ibu negara untuk menemani ayahnya, Park Chung Hee bertugas. Tahun 1976, Park Chung Hee tewas terbunuh dan itu membuat Park dan kedua adiknya berusaha sendiri untuk menghidupi keluarganya.
